If your company has Internet access without a firewall your data is vulnerable. Once a hacker finds that your IP address is accessible they will post your IP address to a hacker bulletin board. This will allow a wide range of things to happen. Some hackers will make adjustments with your network, disconnect users, delete files, stop print jobs etc. Usually that will not destroy your network but just keep you guessing.
Firewalls are usually configurable. This will allow you to tighten the security for your site to fit your needs. The best type of firewall is the standalone unit. The manufacture has firmware in a device that looks like a hub or router. These Firewalls will be connected between your router and your hub/switch for your LAN. They are easy to install and are considered level one on your security check list. We work with PGP, Sonicwall, and 3Com to name a few.
Your next step will be to evaluate the proper type of virus software protection for your network. We recommend using a virus software package that will automatically update your virus profiles and scan every workstation and server automatically.
